Can you buy a gift card with another gift card?

For the named programmes below, the answer is no or restricted: Amazon UK excludes another gift card, Tesco UK excludes third-party gift cards, and Sephora US/Canada excludes another Sephora gift card or eGift Card.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Check the merchandise exclusion, not only the balance

A positive balance does not mean it can buy every item a merchant sells. Gift cards commonly have product exclusions, and “another gift card” can be one of them. The restriction applies when redeeming with the merchant; it is separate from buying the original card here with crypto.

Amazon UK says its gift-card balance cannot buy another gift card. It also excludes cash redemption, reload and transferring unused balance to another Amazon.co.uk account.

Tesco says its UK gift card cannot be used for third-party gift cards. Its exclusions also include lottery purchases, Esso fuel and online grocery shopping.

Buying, topping up and forwarding are separate

Paying for merchandise with a short balance

Some programmes allow another accepted payment method to cover the remainder. That does not make another gift card an eligible merchandise purchase.

Reloading an existing card

Reload rules depend on card type and programme. A reload changes an existing balance; purchasing a new gift card creates another product.

Giving an unused code

Forwarding an eligible, unredeemed code to its intended recipient is not the same checkout action as using its balance to buy a new card. Follow the original programme’s transfer and account rules.

Choose the new gift directly

If you want to give a different merchant, buy that card as a separate gift using an accepted payment method. If you want to add value to the same merchant, first check whether that exact card type can be reloaded or combined.
